The Warsaw Rising Museum has received funding from the Villum Foundation (a part of VELUX Foundation) to support the expansion of the museum. The grant of 24.5 million Danish kroner (approximately 13.8 million PLN) will contribute to the modernisation of the museum.

The expansion will enhance visitor comfort and capacity by adding 7,200 square meters of new space – including a multimedia auditorium, areas for temporary exhibitions, workshop and educational rooms, modern storage facilities, and new dining spaces. The Villum Foundation’s grant specifically supports all glazed surfaces of the new building and the natural light elements integrated into the project, including a 130‑metre glass‑framed entrance hall.

“The expansion of the Warsaw Rising Museum will transform how visitors experience our institution. A new museum pavilion, immersed in green surroundings and shaped by natural light, will create open, welcoming spaces, strengthening the connection between the Museum and the city. This support from the Villum Foundation enables us to realise an architectural vision that brings modern functionality together with a deeply human experience of light, space, and reflection,” says Jan Ołdakowski, Director of the Warsaw Rising Museum.

A design shaped by daylight, greener elements and public value

The concept of the new building, created by architect Mirosław Nizio, was selected through a nationwide architectural competition and emphasises accessibility, natural greenery, and the interplay of natural light. The project aligns with the Villum Foundation’s long-standing commitment to supporting large cultural initiatives that bring benefit and joy to broad sections of society.

“The Warsaw Rising Museum is one of Poland’s most important cultural institutions, with a historical significance that reaches far beyond national borders. The project is fully in line with the Villum Foundation’s ambition to create a more enlightened world, and we are pleased to support a project that will benefit so many people and enrich the cultural fabric of Warsaw,” says Lars Bo Nielsen, Executive Director of the Villum Foundation.

The expansion of the Warsaw Rising Museum is primarily funded by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage and the Capital City of Warsaw. In December 2025, the museum signed a design‑and‑construct agreement with a consortium of construction companies led by NDI S.A., selected through a public tender. The project is scheduled for completion in 2029.
