Finnair in July reported that its passenger volume surged by 12.8 per cent year-on-year to a new monthly record of 1,240,500 in June.

The surge was largely a consequence of an increase in the overall capacity of the majority state-owned airline: Finnair said its capacity measured in available seat kilometres rose by 16.4 per cent from the corresponding period last year, while its passenger load factor fell by 1.4 percentage points to 85.4 per cent.

“During the past quarter, we made monthly records in the number of carried passengers and in several other growth figures,” summarised Pekka Vähähyyppä, the chief financial officer of Finnair.

Asian traffic accounted for almost a half (48%) of the total seat kilometres offered by the airline, following a year-on-year increase of 16.4 per cent in June. The growth in available seat kilometres was mainly a result of an increase in service frequency to Bangkok, Thailand, and Tokyo, Japan, and the opening of a new route to Nanjing, China.

European traffic, on the other hand, continued to account for most of the total number of passengers, after a year-on-year jump of 12.4 per cent to 836,400 in June. Finnair also expanded its capacity on the continent by 18 per cent by growing its narrow-body fleet and adding seats to its existing narrow-body aircraft.
