On the afternoon of 13 December, Helsinki Airport reached its new annual passenger record of 18 million visitors over the course of 2017.
The passenger numbers at Helsinki Airport have grown at an unexpected pace. Airport director Ville Haapasaari estimates that if the increase continues like this, the magical number of 20 million will be counted in 2019.
About half of the travellers are Finnish nationals. Currently, the biggest boost to passenger numbers comes from flights between Europe and Asia, particularly China.
Finavia is investing 900 million euros in the development and expansion of Helsinki Airport in order to strengthen its position as an important hub of travelling between Europe and Asia. After the works are completed, the airport can serve up to 30 million passengers a year.
Despite the unprecedented growth, the record-breaking number didn’t come as a surprise for Finavia. It was evident already in October that the year will end on a new high.
