Helsinki tourism breaks records 9-03-2017

Helsinki enjoyed a record number of overnight stays by travellers last year, and over a half of them were from abroad.

Just last week, it was reported that the number of visitor stays in Lapland reached an all-time high in 2016.

According to Visit Helsinki, the number of registered overnight stays in the capital neared 3 577 000. The busiest months were July and August.

This represents an increase of several percentage points on 2015’s figures, both by foreign and domestic travellers.

Most foreign visitors came from Germany, Sweden, the US, Russia, the UK, Japan and China. The number grew most among US tourists, followed by Japan, China, Spain and Sweden.

Helsinki attracted also a record number of congress visitors in 2016 – their economic impact is estimated of almost 115 million euros

A total of 286 international association meetings were held in Helsinki in 2016, and they were attended by 60,790 congress visitors.
Helsinki is one of the world’s most popular congress cities: according to the latest Union of International Associations (UIA) statistics, Helsinki is ranked 24th.

This year, Helsinki will host events in abundance, partially due to the country’s centennial celebrations, thus the year ahead is expected to be a busy one.
