Preliminary data from Finland’s national statistics agency show that the Finnish population stood at just under 5.5 million at the end of July. Statistics Finland reported Thursday that immigration boosted the population by around 8,500 between January and July. However deaths outnumbered births during the same period.

Statistics Finland’s latest provisional data show that the populace numbered 5,495,830 at the end of July. The population grew by 8,552 during the first seven months of the year.

The agency said that the increase was due to a gain in net migration, as the number of people moving into Finland outstripped the number leaving by 8,801. Deaths for the period also outnumbered births by 279.

According to the preliminary data, some 31,119 babies were born in Finland between January and July – that’s 1,320 fewer than during the same period in 2015.
