Swedish households account for 16 percent of health and medical care costs 31-03-2016

In 2014, health and medical care comprised 11.2 percent of GDP. The government finances 83 percent of the total costs, while households pay 16 percent of the total costs via patient fees and other fees.

Main areas of health and medical care

Costs of health and medical care can be divided into seven main areas. Over half of all costs go to curative and rehabilitative care. Health and medical care regarding care for the elderly and persons with disabilities accounts for one fourth of the health and medical care sector. Nursing costs are also included in these costs. Pharmaceuticals for outpatients account for the third largest cost.
