Denmark stands out among the top 10 largest shipowning nations 15-02-2016

Denmark is not only in the top 10 of shipowning countries, it is also the only country in the world to increase the value of its merchant fleet over the last 12 months.

While all other leading shipowning countries have experienced reduced value of their national fleet - e.g. the UK is down 19% and Norway 17% from over the last year - Denmark has increased the value with an impressive 18 % to nearly $23bn. This gives Denmark a 9th position worldwide.

Changing Danish governments have pursued a far-sighted policy of continuously improving the sector’s business conditions, which has paved the way for one of the world’s most powerful maritime industry ecosystems.

Maritime Advisor at Invest in Denmark, Jørn Bang Andersen, explains:
“In a global low growth economy with over-capacity in nearly every industry the Danish shipping industry continues to grow and show great resilience. Denmark’s shipping industry is dynamic and transports approximately 10 % of the entire world’s trade. Combined with the International Ship Register and the attractive tonnage tax system, Denmark presents the perfect platform for doing business both for ship owners and suppliers to the industry”.
