The Finnish capital has been placed ninth in this year’s Liveability Ranking

The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) has announced the results of its annual survey looking at the liveability of 140 of the world’s major cities.

Using healthcare, education, stability, infrastructure, culture and environment as defining factors, Helsinki’s placement in 2016 is a step up from last year’s findings.

“Assessing liveability has a broad range of uses,” EIN comments in its report, “from benchmarking perceptions of development levels to assigning a hardship allowance as part of expatriate relocation packages.”

The top three remained unchanged from last year. Australia’s second-largest city, Melbourne, was ranked the world’s most liveable for a sixth consecutive year, followed by Vienna, Austria and Vancouver, Canada.

Syrian capital Damascus was deemed to be the world’s least liveable city, followed by Libya’s Tripoli and Nigeria’s Lagos.
