Oulu-based company’s map service helps people with impaired hearing 23-02-2015

The Oulu-based startup Qlu is the world’s first company to have launched a web service for people with impaired hearing. The service helps people with hearing aids to find the public spaces that offer them good audibility.

The method developed by Qlu is used to assess the sound quality of the induction loops in public spaces. Based on the measurements, an audibility map is produced to help hard-of-hearing persons to find the service desks, concert and conference venues and other spaces where the functioning of the induction loops has been ascertained. The map thus allows its users to know where in the room they will hear best with their hearing aid.

Qlu’s measurement method is the first of its kind in the world. The audibility map will be published in the maps.qlu.fi service. The objective is to develop it into an international hearing portal that includes all of the world’s public spaces.
