Denmark: reduction of energy consumption in buildings 15-12-2014

Requirements for windows and other building materials, better advice to homeowners and an improved energy labelling scheme will help to reduce energy consumption in our buildings. Climate, Energy and Building Minister Rasmus Petersen today presents 21 concrete initiatives which are expected to reduce energy consumption for heating in existing buildings by 35 per cent.

The 21 initiatives form part of a strategy for energy renovation of buildings which is part of the energy agreement of 2012.
"The energy renovation strategy is the largest and most comprehensive strategy ever undertaken to reduce energy consumption in existing buildings in Denmark. It is a significant milestone in our transition to an energy-efficient society. It is through such strategic initiatives that the Government expects to reduce heat consumption in existing buildings by 35 percent by 2050. We are sending an important signal to both building owners and construction industries. I hope that the industry will use these measures as the basis for long-term commitments and investments in new technological solutions," says Minister for Climate, Energy and Building Rasmus Helveg Petersen.

The strategy aims to apply these 21 specific initiatives to different areas of the national building stock and to different actors - from professional entities to ordinary homeowners. The Government proposes to upgrade the energy requirements for windows and other elements which make up the building's environmental footprint.
