Scania Polska: The Swedish carrier chooses Scania electric buses

Scania will supply Bergkvarabuss with six electric buses charged at the depot. The vehicles will be used to serve the Strängnäs area on behalf of Sörmlandstrafiken. Scania will also provide a complete charging infrastructure to optimize and maintain servicing and charging of the buses.

- Passengers from Strängnäs will travel in climate-friendly vehicles under the new Scania program, which includes not only the latest technology but also improved driving comfort. From the passenger's point of view, electric buses mean less noise and a smoother ride, says Staffan Karlsson, vice president of Bergkvarabuss.

The new generation of Scania CityWide LF low-floor buses is characterized by a friendlier interior, as well as an improved driver's seat for optimal ergonomics. The lighter weight of the vehicle increases the number of passengers.

Scania put electric buses into service in Sweden in 2018, mainly in Östersund in the north of the country, where vehicles are charged with pantographs. However, Bergkvarabuss chose the option of charging at the depot. Buses are equipped with batteries with a capacity of 330 kWh and charged with electricity up to 150 kWh. The charging infrastructure was provided in cooperation with LaddAlliansen Nordic AB and Kempower Oy.

- Scania electric buses now have an extremely efficient driveline, with intelligent steering and electrical control. We have kept energy consumption to a minimum thanks to highly efficient engines combined with brake energy recovery and an intelligent air conditioning system, says Henrik Eng, Scania Sverige's bus sales manager.

Thanks to the new air conditioning system, operators can successfully use vehicles in temperatures from –35 ° C to + 40 ° C. The electric heat pump is connected to an additional heating system and an integrated heating circuit in the batteries. The energy-saving system increases the range by 50 km on a single charge.

The operating time and range are also influenced by the battery optimization system in terms of the power needed in road traffic. Typically this is done in the depot with the batteries fully charged, wasting time parking and recharging. Currently, the battery stabilization procedure is performed by the new vehicle while driving.

The advanced battery management system provides data for each bus, including: state of charge, electricity consumption and possible errors. Scania Fleet Management provides the haulier with additional information on charging options, energy consumption and service needs, which makes the driver's job easier.
