Scania Polska: Scania is testing autonomous vehicles on a highway in Sweden
8-02-2021TuSimple is a leader in the development of autonomous vehicles and a key partner of Scania and the Traton Group in this field. Permission to conduct tests on the E4 road was granted by the Swedish Transport Agency.
Scania autonomous trucks will operate commercially under the Scania Transport Laboratory operations. Their load will be components for the production of Scania vehicles. The tests will cover the fourth level of autonomous driving according to the SAE 5-level classification. This means that Scania trucks will move autonomously, but will be supervised by the driver for safety reasons. There will also be an engineer conducting the test in the cabin. Its task will be to monitor and verify the information provided to the vehicle by sensors enabling autonomous driving.- Both the United States and China are already running Level 4 autonomous vehicle tests on public roads, but as far as I know, Sweden is the first country in Europe to test this solution on the highway, on laden vehicles, Hans Nordin responsible for the Hub2hub project.
Later this year, Scania intends to extend the test route to cover the entire section between Södertälje and Helsingborg.
- We expect to be able to test autonomous driving in other European countries and in China in the coming years, adds Hans Nordin.
Scania has been testing autonomous trucks in Australian mines since 2017.
"The experience gained during these tests shows that autonomous vehicles can be deployed in closed areas, such as mines or terminals, within a few years," says Hans Nordin.
In his opinion, transport described as Hub2hub, i.e. transport taking place between logistics centers, is the first type of transport in which autonomous trucks can be used on public roads.
- The pace of development of autonomous vehicles allows us to introduce this solution to the market within the next 5 years, at least in this type of transport. I think that more time will pass before autonomous vehicles appear on two-way traffic roads and in an urbanized environment - sums up Hans Nordin ..
TuSimple, with which Scania works, was founded in 2015 and since then its autonomous vehicles have traveled millions of kilometers on motorways in Level 4 tests, contributing to the development of the solution. TuSimple is recognized as a leader in the field of autonomous driving. The company is headquartered in San Diego, United States, with plants in Tucson, Shanghai and Beijing.
