Fortum Power and Heat Polska: The way how to deal with smog in Wrocław

1-09-2020

Nearly every third European city with the lowest air quality is located in Poland, which for residents means an increased risk of heart disease, strokes, cancer and other lung diseases. In Poland, awareness of the threats related to the phenomenon of smog is growing and the involvement of local governments and companies in solving this problem is increasing. According to the authors of the report "Wrocławscy and Stockholmscy: ecology in Polish and Swedish", effective measures are being taken in Wrocław to improve air quality in the city, especially in its center.

The area of Wrocław most loaded with individual solid fuel stoves is downtown. About 52% of these heat sources are located there. However, since 2018, in consultation with the city authorities, as part of the "Clean Energy for Wrocław" project, Fortum has been connecting houses from this area to the heating network as part of investment in its development and modernization. In numbers, this means 77 buildings connected to the network, which translates into over 4,000 furnaces out of service.
