Skanska Property Poland: Smog-fighting concrete. A green spot was created on the map of Warsaw.

24-10-2018

A concrete pavement was created at the Generation Park office project in Warsaw, which cleans the air from car exhaust fumes. This is possible due to the use of a special concrete mix that breaks down harmful NOx particles into neutral nitrogen compounds.

The project has been tested for 9 months in laboratory and urban conditions in various levels of car traffic. Thanks to the positive results, a special concrete pavement with the area of a football field will be located between the Generation Park office buildings at the DaszyÅ„ski roundabout. This is the first large-area use of air-cleaning concrete in a commercial project in Central and Eastern Europe. The project's partners are Skanska - investor and general contractor of Generation Park, and Górażdże Cement S.A - the concrete producer.

The special concrete tested at the constructionsite is designed to actively fight urban smog. How? The latest science innovations give the concrete  photocatalytic properties. Thanks to the sun's rays, it is used to reduce harmful compounds from car exhausts (including nitrogen dioxide) that are in the city air. These compounds are broken down into harmless byproducts, similar to those used for fertilizing plants and then discharged into the soil together with rainwater. An additional advantage of the concrete itself are its self-cleaning properties.

Around the Generation Park complex, a green concrete square with the area of a football field will be built. This area will neutralize nitrogen oxides emitted from the exhaust of 10 diesel cars, assuming that each of them covers 17,000 km every year. Project partners are Skanska and Górażdże Cement S.A. and scientific units: Institute of Geophysics of the Polish Academy of Sciences, Faculty of Civil Engineering at the Warsaw University of Technology and Faculty of Geology at the University of Warsaw.
