DSV Group Poland: Moving one piece at the time
5-09-2014DSV Air & Sea has delivered the final wind turbine for the Snowtown Wind Farm in South Australia.
The project started in March 2013 when Siemens Wind Power nominated DSV Projects departments in Denmark, China and Australia as carrier on the project. Since then, we have loaded three vessels in Denmark, five ships in Vietnam and five ships in China with a total of 1,200 wind turbine components. The weight of all shipments totalled approximately 35,000 tons, with a volume of approximately 265,000m3.
The successful performance of the project could not be possible without the close collaboration between project departments in Denmark, China and Australia, each of which has had quite special skills to contribute to the phasing-out - says Henrik Vammen, Project Manager Onshore Wind. With so many components to deliver and with great distances to cover, one might expect to encounter some problems along the way: time delays, storage space, packing issues, etc. However, before we started transporting any of the components, we identified possible problems and developed contingency plans. And the planning paid off. We delivered all components ahead of schedule, with damage to only one out of the 1200 components – quite impressive for a project of this size.
The cross-collaboration between everyone involved was a driving factor in the successful delivery of the project. Earlier this year, DSV delivered the last of 90 wind turbines on the Snowtown II project – a wind farm in South Australia that will generate 989GWh of electricity per year, enough to supply energy for 170,000 households. The project consists of 90 x 3.0MW wind turbines manufactured by Siemens.
