The Ministry of Economy has prepared a draft of amendment to the act on banking law. The amendment is to limit banks’ practice of taking additional advantage of exchange rates differences between the prices of purchase and sale of any given currency. This practice has been widely applied in case of the ever-so-popular foreign currency loans. The amendments to the act are to enable consumers to repay the loan granted in a foreign currency, denominated or indexed to the foreign currency, in that currency, which eliminates the problem of exchange rates differences. If the consumer does not want to make use of such a possibility, the loan installment are to be calculated each time based on the average exchange rate of the National Bank of Poland as of the day preceding the day of repayment and not the exchange rate used in the particular bank.
