Vaggi Varri: In the Tundra of the Sami

Vaggi Varri: In the Tundra of the Sami from Alter Publisher.

The authors describe several treks in national parks of northern Sweden, mountain climbs and hikes on routes rarely visited by tourists. They weave a story about the unusual landscape, the severe climate, the deceptively rich nature, the difficulties and charms of their expeditions. They also tell us about the Sami, inhabitants of Laponia. They help acquaint us with their difficult history, problems with which they must always struggle, and also their rich tradition. The Sami, like the former inhabitants of the tundra, often still adapt the rhythm of their life to the migration of the reindeer, the most important animal for them, while in spare moments they do handicrafts, perform music called joik (a type of singing typical of the region), care for and popularize their unusual culture (evidence of which can be seen at the museum in Jokkmokk, which is thoroughly described by the authors), run their own companies and use Facebook.

A CD with recordings of the sounds of the tundra and traditional music of the Sami is included.
